Before & After Meetups: Milwaukee Avenue Meetup Mile

Welcome to Before & After Meetups — a new series where we map out your entire meetup night, from the first pour to the last round. Every spot in each guide is walkable from the others, so you never have to move your car.

Before: Coffee & Pre-Meetup

You've got a couple hours before the meetup starts. Here's where to post up.

The Wormhole Coffee — 1462 N Milwaukee Ave

Wicker Park's most iconic coffee shop, themed around 1980s nostalgia complete with a full-size DeLorean replica, vintage lunchboxes, and retro arcade references. The WiFi is solid, the hours are long (7 AM - 11 PM daily), and the creative drinks are conversation starters.

  • Vibe: Retro-themed, laptop-friendly, creative energy
  • Good for: Solo work sessions, a fun pre-meetup caffeine stop
  • Don't miss: The DeLorean in the corner and the Koopa Troopa Latte

Colectivo Coffee — 1211 N Damen Ave

Colectivo's largest Chicago location occupies a massive two-level space with soaring ceilings, communal tables, and heated indoor-outdoor seating. Milwaukee-roasted fair trade beans, all-day breakfast burritos, and craft beer on tap.

  • Vibe: Spacious, community-oriented, work-friendly
  • Good for: Groups meeting before an event, extended laptop sessions with food
  • Don't miss: The made-from-scratch Troubadour Bakery pastries delivered fresh daily

Ipsento 606 — 1813 N Milwaukee Ave

Named for the adjacent 606 elevated trail, this Bucktown coffee bar serves some of Chicago's most thoughtfully sourced specialty coffee. The space features garage-door windows that open onto a pocket park, creating an indoor-outdoor feel.

  • Vibe: Design-forward, specialty-focused, trail-adjacent
  • Good for: Serious coffee enthusiasts, a quieter alternative to the busier Milwaukee Ave spots
  • Don't miss: Their seasonal single-origin pour-overs and the pocket park seating

The Meetup

Wicker Park and Bucktown are home to Chicago's most vibrant independent tech scene. Meetup venues cluster around the Damen Blue Line stop — co-working spaces, brewpubs, and event rooms host developer meetups, UX design groups, startup pitch nights, and creative tech gatherings. Most evening events run 6-8 PM.

After: Dinner

The meetup's over and the conversation's still going. Keep it moving.

Big Star — 1531 N Damen Ave

A bourbon-and-beer-fueled taco joint from James Beard Award-winning chef Paul Kahan. The menu of authentic Mexican street food tacos, loaded nachos, and loaded fries is built for group ordering. The extensive single-barrel bourbon program and late hours mean dinner can stretch into nightcap territory.

  • Vibe: Honky-tonk, lively, taco-slinging
  • Price: $
  • Good for: Groups of 4-8 sharing tacos and nachos, casual post-meetup energy
  • Don't miss: The house-selected single-barrel bourbon and the fish tacos

Club Lucky — 1824 W Wabansia Ave

A 1940s-style Italian-American supper club with big leather booths, a cocktail lounge, and family-style plates of classic Italian comfort food. The atmosphere — retro signage, low lighting, old-school cocktails — makes every dinner feel like an occasion.

  • Vibe: Retro supper club, intimate booths, old-school charm
  • Price: $$
  • Good for: Groups of 6-8 who want a sit-down experience, celebratory post-meetup dinners
  • Don't miss: The family-style pastas and the cocktail lounge
  • Reserve ahead: Recommended on weekends

After: Nightcaps

Not ready to call it? Neither are these spots.

Bangers & Lace — 1670 W Division St

A Midwestern lodge-styled craft beer bar with 32 rotating taps showcasing local breweries. Draft beers run $5-10, making this the affordable post-meetup default. Sunday brunch is a bonus if your meetup happens to be a weekend hackathon.

  • Vibe: Lodge-style, craft beer-focused, casual and warm
  • Price: $
  • Good for: The whole crew, especially beer enthusiasts who want variety and value
  • Don't miss: Ask the bartender what's new on the rotating tap list and pair it with a sausage

Bordel — 1721 W Division St

A Parisian-inspired speakeasy cocktail bar and cabaret hidden on the second floor above Mama Delia restaurant. Craft cocktails, world-class burlesque performances, and live music Thursday through Saturday. The ultimate "I know a place" moment.

  • Vibe: Intimate speakeasy, Parisian cabaret, theatrical
  • Price: $$$
  • Good for: Impressing out-of-town colleagues, a proper nightcap with 2-4 people
  • Don't miss: Book stage-side seating for the burlesque shows (Thu-Sat)
  • Reserve ahead: Strongly recommended via Resy; open Thu-Sat only

The Walking Route

Here's how the night flows on foot:

1. 3:00 PM — Post up at The Wormhole Coffee or Colectivo with your laptop

2. 5:30 PM — Walk to your meetup venue (most are within 5-10 min along Milwaukee Ave or Damen)

3. 8:00 PM — Meetup wraps, walk to Big Star for tacos (3 min) or Club Lucky for Italian supper club vibes (5 min)

4. 9:30 PM — Stroll to Bangers & Lace for craft beers and sausages (5 min) or Bordel for speakeasy cocktails and cabaret (next door, Thu-Sat only)

Total walking distance for the entire night: under a mile.
